Have you ever had a dream or idea that you just can’t seem to shake? But every time it creeps in, you convince yourself it’s not possible?
The narratives we tell ourselves about why something is or is not possible is more powerful than you think. Those negative thoughts are a byproduct of our limiting beliefs and truly impacting what we spend our time on. There are some very common ones that we are all susceptible to. In this blog, we will explore them and more importantly, what you can do about them.
Limiting beliefs are something we all carry with us—whether we realize it or not. These beliefs, rooted in psychology, stem from what are called core beliefs, a concept developed through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) by Aaron Beck in the 1960s. While these core beliefs shape how we see ourselves and the world, some of them can be deeply restrictive and downright inaccurate, hindering our potential for growth and success.
It’s important to note that the goal isn’t to eliminate limiting beliefs entirely, as sometimes they can have positive effects. For example, the limiting belief that “I can’t do everything on my own” has encouraged me to ask for help, learn from others and reduce the stress of trying to be a one woman operation. As I’m sure you know, a key to being a good leader is knowing how to delegate and ask for help when needed.
However, for limiting beliefs that are strictly discouraging, the objective is to challenge them, to recognize when they are holding us back, and to actively reshape our thinking.
Common Limiting Beliefs Leaders Face
As a leader, you’re likely familiar with some of the most common limiting beliefs. They may manifest as thoughts like:
- I’m not good enough: This can sound like, “Who do I think I am?” and it prevents individuals from pursuing meaningful goals and taking necessary risks. A lot of times perfectionism is in play here, here are three ways to challenge perfectionism.
- I don’t have enough experience: Feeling underqualified or unprepared can keep someone from stepping into new opportunities. You may find yourself counting yourself out before anyone has the chance to see how great you are.
- I don’t deserve it: Feelings of unworthiness may cause people to overwork in an attempt to justify their success or needing to “earn” rest.. I see this one come up a lot particularly in coaching clients who are on a successful path.
These beliefs are not just thoughts—they can shape behaviors, choices, and ultimately career trajectories. Below are steps to guide you through challenging them so that they no longer dictate how you’re showing up as a leader in any space you are in.
4 Steps to Challenge Your Limiting Beliefs
So, how can you as a leader begin to challenge your own limiting beliefs? Here are four steps to consider:
- Identify Your Limiting Belief
The first step is awareness. Take some time to reflect and pinpoint the belief that is holding you back. Whether it’s related to your abilities, your age, or your worthiness, isolating the belief is key to addressing it. You can use this list for more ideas of limiting beliefs. - Recognize That It Is Just a Belief
It’s crucial to understand that limiting beliefs are thoughts, not facts. A belief is not a definitive truth—it’s simply a mindset that you have accepted, often without question. But not anymore! - Challenge the Belief
Once you’ve recognized your limiting belief, challenge it by asking critical questions:- Is this belief supported by actual facts?
- What evidence exists that contradicts this belief?
- How might my perspective change if I approached this belief from a different angle?
- Does this belief serve my growth, or does it hinder me?
These questions help broaden your perspective and weaken the hold that the limiting belief has over your decision-making.
- Adopt a New Belief
The final step is to replace the old, limiting belief with a new, empowering one. Visualizing your success, based on this new belief, can help condition your mind to accept new possibilities. The more you practice this, the more aligned your actions and mindset will become with your goals!
Leaders are not immune to limiting beliefs, but you are equipped to challenge and overcome them. Whether it’s your self-perception, abilities, or qualifications, remember that these beliefs are not unchangeable facts. They are mental barriers—ones that can be challenged.
The question to ask yourself now is: What’s the limiting belief holding me back, and how can I break through it?
Happy breakthroughs!
