We’ve all encountered that one leader who clearly stopped growing years ago. (Hopefully, it’s not you.)

The thing is, no one decides to be that leader. But it happens more often than most of us would like to admit. The slow fade happens when reflection takes a back seat, learning stalls, and we prioritize everything but our own personal development.

Most professionals want to grow. But life and leadership are demanding, and growth gets pushed to “someday” or “when I have time.”

Let’s be honest: “Too busy,” “too tired,” and “it’s not urgent” are common traps. Too busy looks like shuffling your own growth to the bottom of the to-do list. Too tired shows up when you pour into everyone else but leave no energy for yourself. And ‘not urgent’ is the most dangerous of all because by the time it feels urgent, the damage is already done. A disengaged team, a stalled career, or the realization you’re coasting instead of leading.

Personal development can feel like a luxury. Something you’ll get around to when the calendar clears, the team is staffed, the pressure lets up and the stars align.

But those days rarely come on their own.

What Gets in the Way of Personal Development?

  • Believing growth is optional
  • Waiting for a “better” time
  • Not knowing where to focus
  • Assuming your experience is enough
  • Our own limiting beliefs

Here’s the truth: Personal development isn’t something that just happens. And just like anything else that matters, it requires intention.

You make time for meetings, metrics, and milestones. So the real question is are you making time for your own development?

The leaders who continue to evolve don’t wait for space to open up. They make space.

How Your Personal Development Plan can Start Small and Stay Consistent

You don’t need a 12-month course or another degree to grow. You just need a simple plan and the discipline to follow through.

Here’s a Personal Development Plan structure that works:

  1. Choose one theme per quarter.
Pick an area you want to grow in. Think: communication, delegation, confidence, executive presence, influence. Keep it focused.
  2. Get clear on your goals.
What does success look like? How will you know you’ve grown? Start with the end in mind. Write it down. Measurable goals help you track your progress and keep momentum. For example, Q1 might be focused on delegation, giving away responsibility for the growth of others. Q2 could be speaking up in professional setting by showing up with calm and confidence, even in high-pressure rooms.
  3. Find a resource or mentor.
Growth needs guidance. Tap into your network. Choose a mentor, podcast, book, coach, or course that aligns with your goal. Bonus if you pair it with accountability.
  4. Set a rhythm for reflection.
    Once a week, ask yourself:
    • What did I learn?
    • What challenged me?
    • What’s one small shift I can make?

This habit alone can keep you evolving even during busy seasons. Personal development doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with one simple habit — tracking your wins. Download the free Win Tracker below and spend five minutes a week recognizing how far you’ve come.

Growth Doesn’t Require a Sabbatical

Of course, the pushback I hear most often is: ‘I don’t have time.’ And it’s true that leaders are stretched thin. But here’s the shift: growth doesn’t require disappearing from your role. It requires weaving development into your rhythm don’t need more time. You need more intention. Development doesn’t happen in a vacuum or during “slower months.” It happens when you choose to invest in yourself right in the middle of the mess, the meetings, and the momentum.

The truth is, no one can prioritize your growth for you. Your calendar won’t magically clear, and the perfect time won’t appear. But the moment you choose to invest in yourself, even in small ways, you set a new standard for your leadership. Your future self and your team will thank you for it.
